M11: Pressure Performance

Pressure Performance

Objective: Develop performance routines, visualisation, breathing, reset routines and pressure-simulation practice to perform consistently under match-point situations and manage momentum.

Why it matters: Technical and tactical skill is only fully expressed under pressure if the player has trained specific routines to manage it — pressure performance is a trainable skill, not a fixed trait.

Watch: [Video placeholder] A player using a visible reset routine between shots during a high-pressure match situation.

Learn: Build a personal pre-shot and reset routine incorporating breathing and brief visualisation. Practise recognising and responding to momentum shifts, and develop a specific routine for match-point situations and recovering focus immediately after an error.

See it: [Image placeholder] A step-by-step diagram of a sample pre-shot and reset routine.

Practise: Design your own reset routine (breathing pattern, physical cue, brief visualisation) and use it consistently in practice for two weeks before introducing it into competition.

Test yourself: 1) Why is a reset routine used after an error as important as a pre-shot routine? 2) What is "momentum" in a match context, and name one way a player can interrupt an opponent's momentum. 3) What should a match-point routine achieve that a normal shot routine does not need to?

Challenge: Run a pressure-simulation practice session (race to a low target with a real or perceived stake) and use your reset routine after every error, logging its effect on your recovery.

Common mistakes: Only using a routine in practice and abandoning it under real pressure; treating an error as something to dwell on rather than reset from; ignoring momentum shifts within a frame or match.

Coaching cue: "The routine is what you trust when the shot isn't."

Completion criteria: A defined personal reset and match-point routine, trialled in at least one pressure-simulation session and one competitive match.
