Objective: Learn controlled follow, controlled screw, and left/right side, including how side changes cushion response and object-ball throw.
Why it matters: Spin lets you send the cue ball to places pure speed and angle can't reach, but uncontrolled spin causes more misses than any other technique.
Watch: [Video placeholder] Demonstration of controlled follow, controlled screw, and side applied on a straight shot and an angled shot.
Learn: A short guide covering topspin (follow) and backspin (screw), follow-plus-angle and screw-plus-angle combinations, left and right side, why side changes the shot, side's effect on cushions and object-ball throw, and basic compensation.
See it: [Image placeholder] Diagram of cue-tip contact points for follow, screw and side, with the resulting cue-ball paths.
Practise: Play 10 shots using only follow, then 10 using only screw, from the same position, noting where the cue ball finishes; repeat with left and right side on a shot into a cushion.
Test yourself: 1) What is the difference between follow and screw? 2) Why does side change how the cue ball comes off a cushion? 3) What is throw, and how does side affect it?
Challenge: Using only controlled, not maximum, side, pot a shot that requires the cue ball to come off one cushion and finish in a target zone.
Common mistakes: Using maximum side when only a small amount is needed, causing missed pots through excess throw.
Coaching cue: Ask: how much side does this shot actually need, not how much can I put on it?
Completion criteria: Demonstrate controlled follow, screw, left side and right side on request, finishing the cue ball in the intended target area each time.
