M7: Start Thinking Tactically
Start Thinking Tactically
Objective: Learn when not to attack, and understand simple safety, pocket blocking, snookering and two-way shots.
Why it matters: Once you can pot and control the cue ball, tactical decisions decide whether you win close frames. Always attacking loses more frames than it wins.
Watch: [Video placeholder] Demonstration of a simple safety shot, a pocket-blocking safety, and a two-way shot.
Learn: A short guide covering why you shouldn't always attack, simple safety play, pocket blocking, snookering your opponent, two-way shots, and weighing risk against reward.
See it: [Image placeholder] Diagram showing a safety shot leaving the opponent snookered behind a blocking ball.
Practise: From a difficult layout, play three safety shots that leave the cue ball safe and, where possible, leave your opponent snookered.
Test yourself: 1) What is a two-way shot? 2) Why might playing safe be better than attempting a low-percentage pot? 3) What does snookering an opponent mean?
Challenge: In a practice frame, deliberately play at least two safety shots before taking any risky pot, and note the effect on the frame.
Common mistakes: Always attempting to pot, even when the risk of leaving an easy shot for your opponent outweighs the reward.
Coaching cue: Before every shot, ask: is this the highest value shot, or just the most tempting one?
Completion criteria: Correctly identify and execute a safety shot, a blocking shot and a two-way shot when presented with each layout.
