The Break
The Legal, Repeatable Break — MUST
Objective: Break legally and with control, understanding what changes between rulesets.
Why it matters: An illegal break costs you the frame before it starts; an uncontrolled one gives your opponent an easy table. Both are avoidable.
Watch: Break-mechanics video: stance, grip adjustment, cue-ball placement, and ruleset-specific legality (pot/2-past-half vs 3 points vs 4-cushion pre-2022 World Rules).
Learn: Guide covering legal requirements per ruleset and break strategy choices (soft controlled vs full power) by table condition.
See it: Diagram: cue-ball starting position options and typical break paths.
Practise: Break Drill 1 (legality): 10 breaks, log legal vs foul. Break Drill 2 (control): 10 breaks, log cue-ball finishing zone. Break Drill 3 (output): 10 breaks, log balls potted/points made.
Test yourself: Quiz: identify whether a described break is legal under each of the three rulesets.
Challenge: String together 5 consecutive legal breaks with the cue ball finishing in the middle third of the table.
Common mistakes: Breaking at maximum power regardless of table or ruleset, mistaking 'hardest' for 'best.'
Coaching cue: Control first, power only when control is solved.
Completion criteria: 80%+ legal breaks across 20 attempts, logged on the Break Performance Tracker.
