Objective: Develop a pre-shot routine that holds under pressure, recover cleanly after mistakes, decide confidently under time pressure, and play the final three balls (including the black) with a match-point mentality.
Why it matters: Technical skill built in practice is only useful if it survives contact with pressure - the closing stages of a frame are where matches are actually won or lost.
Watch: [Video placeholder] A player working through a consistent pre-shot routine on the final three balls of a close frame.
Learn: A pre-shot routine (stance, practice strokes, final look, commitment) should stay identical whether the shot is easy or match-deciding - consistency is what pressure tests. After a mistake, use a short reset (a breath, a step back, a fixed phrase) before your next shot rather than carrying the error forward. When a shot clock or slow play is an issue, commit to a decision-making process rather than freezing - a good-enough decision made calmly beats a perfect decision made late. The final three balls, and the black in particular, deserve the same routine as ball one, played with a "match-point" mentality: treat every remaining shot as if it decides the outcome, because it does.
See it: [Image placeholder] A simple routine checklist graphic: stance - practice strokes - final look - commit.
Practise: In practice frames, deliberately play out the final three balls and the black under a self-imposed time limit, and rate your routine consistency (1-5) after each attempt.
Test yourself: 1) Why should a pre-shot routine stay the same under pressure? 2) What is a useful way to reset after a missed shot? 3) What does "match-point mentality" mean when applied to the first ball of a rack, not just the last?
Challenge: Complete 15 pressure reps of "final three balls plus the black" under a time limit, successfully clearing at least 10.
Common mistakes: Rushing the routine when nervous; letting a missed shot affect the next one; treating only the literal last ball as important instead of building pressure habits from the start of the rack.
Coaching cue: "Same routine, every ball, every time - especially the ones that matter most."
Completion criteria: Clear 10 of 15 pressure-rep sets (final three balls + black) under a time limit while maintaining a visibly consistent pre-shot routine.
