Objective: Analyse cue action, alignment, timing, stroke efficiency, grip pressure, cue speed, cue elevation, spin consistency and repeatability using video analysis.
Why it matters: At advanced level, small technical inefficiencies that were invisible at lower levels start to cost frames - a rigorous audit finds them before they cost you matches.
Watch: [Video placeholder] A frame-by-frame video analysis session breaking down cue action, alignment and timing against a technical checklist.
Learn: Record your cue action from front-on and side-on angles and review it against a checklist: alignment (are your eyes, cue and target truly in line), timing (is your pause consistent), stroke efficiency (is the cue moving on a straight line with no wasted movement), grip pressure (tension increases under pressure - notice it), cue speed, cue elevation (a raised butt introduces unwanted swerve) and spin consistency across repeated attempts. Repeatability - producing the same result under the same conditions - is the single measure that ties all of these together.
See it: [Image placeholder] A side-by-side still-frame comparison of a technically sound cue action against a flawed one, with the differences annotated.
Practise: Film 20 shots from two angles, then score each of the nine checklist items out of 5, identifying your two lowest-scoring areas.
Test yourself: 1) Why is video analysis more reliable than self-assessment alone at this level? 2) What does "repeatability" mean as a technical measure? 3) Name three checklist items used in the Elite Technical Audit.
Challenge: Complete a full 20-shot filmed audit, score every checklist item, and set one specific technical goal to address the lowest score before moving on.
Common mistakes: Only reviewing footage of successful shots; ignoring grip-pressure changes under match pressure; treating the audit as a one-off rather than a recurring check.
Coaching cue: "You can't fix what you haven't measured - film it first."
Completion criteria: Complete a full nine-point filmed technical audit with scores recorded for each item and one identified priority area for improvement.
