M7: Reading the Table

Reading the Table

Objective: Quickly identify cloth speed, nap, cushion response, pocket response, ball condition, table roll and relevant humidity/table conditions, and complete a 10-minute table calibration routine.

Why it matters: The same shot plays differently on every table - reading conditions quickly and accurately prevents costly surprises early in a match.

Watch: [Video placeholder] A player working through a full 10-minute table calibration routine before a match, testing each condition in turn.

Learn: Cloth speed affects how far the cue ball travels for a given stroke and must be tested early, not assumed. Nap direction subtly influences roll on older or directional cloths. Cushion and pocket response vary between tables and even between pockets on the same table - test more than one. Ball condition (cleanliness, wear) changes both pot and positional outcomes. Table roll (whether the table runs slightly true, or drifts) only reveals itself with a deliberate straight-line test. Where relevant, humidity and room conditions can shift cloth speed during a long session, so recalibrate if conditions change noticeably.

See it: [Image placeholder] A one-page 10-minute calibration routine checklist covering all seven conditions in order.

Practise: On a new or unfamiliar table, run the full 10-minute calibration routine and record your findings for each of the seven conditions before playing any competitive frames.

Test yourself: 1) Why should cloth speed be tested rather than assumed? 2) What is a simple way to test table roll? 3) Why might you need to recalibrate mid-session?

Challenge: Complete the 10-minute calibration routine on three different tables and compare your logged results to identify how differently each one plays.

Common mistakes: Skipping calibration because a table "looks" similar to a familiar one; testing only one area of the table (e.g. only one pocket); failing to notice conditions changing over a long session.

Coaching cue: "Read the table before the table reads you."

Completion criteria: Complete and log the full 10-minute calibration routine on at least three different tables, correctly identifying each of the seven tracked conditions.
