M10: Pressure Performance

Pressure Performance

Objective: Strengthen your pre-shot routine under pressure, use visualisation and breathing techniques, apply reset routines, handle missed blacks and recover from errors, and perform under the added pressure of being watched or streamed.

Why it matters: Advanced-level matches increasingly come with real pressure - crowds, cameras, high stakes - and performance under pressure is a trainable skill, not just a personality trait.

Watch: [Video placeholder] A player using visualisation and breathing techniques before a high-pressure shot, followed by a clean reset after a missed black.

Learn: A pre-shot routine under pressure should be identical to your normal routine, just executed more deliberately. Visualisation - mentally rehearsing the shot and its outcome before playing it - and controlled breathing both help regulate arousal levels before a big shot. A reset routine (a breath, a fixed phrase, a physical cue) helps you let go of a missed shot, and is especially important after missing a black, which carries disproportionate psychological weight. Recovering from errors quickly, rather than carrying frustration into the next shot, is a trainable habit. Playing on television, streamed tables, or in front of an audience adds a layer of pressure that specifically needs practice exposure - simulate it deliberately rather than encountering it for the first time in a real event.

See it: [Image placeholder] A simple pressure-routine diagram: breathe - visualise - commit - reset if needed.

Practise: Practise 10 high-pressure simulated shots (add a stake, an audience, or a personal deadline) using visualisation and breathing beforehand, and rate your composure (1-5) afterwards.

Test yourself: 1) Why should a pressure routine be the same as your normal routine, just more deliberate? 2) What is a "reset routine" and when is it especially important? 3) How can you practise for audience or camera pressure before it happens for real?

Challenge: Complete 15 simulated high-pressure shots (with a real stake or audience where possible), successfully applying your full routine (breathe, visualise, commit, reset if needed) on at least 12 of them.

Common mistakes: Changing your routine under pressure instead of trusting it; letting a missed black affect your composure for several shots afterward; avoiding pressure practice until faced with it in a real event.

Coaching cue: "Same routine, more pressure - trust what you've built."

Completion criteria: Complete 15 simulated pressure shots, correctly applying the full pressure routine on at least 12, with self-rated composure scores logged for each.
